Columbia Medical Device Company Gets Grant to Adapt Its Eye Test for Primary Care Docs


Columbia medical device company Vasoptic Medical Inc. has been awarded a two-year, $650,000 federal grant to develop a portable version of its eye testing technology.


Vasoptic’s diagnostic software can analyze pictures of patients’ retina to determine whether they are at risk for developing diabetic retinopathy, an eye condition that can lead to blindness if untreated. The Small Business Innovation Research Grant from the National Institute of the Aging will help Vasoptic and researchers at Johns Hopkins University develop a specialized camera with the diagnostic technology built in.
