FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Columbia, MD (March 5, 2014)—Vasoptic Medical, Inc. (VMI), a Maryland-based medical device company, announced today that they were awarded $200,000 from the BioMaryland Center (BMC) for further development of Vasoptic Medical’s imaging technology. The technology being developed can be used for the rapid and inexpensive assessment of the functional state of the retina, which can lead to timely detection of a variety of ophthalmic and systemic disease conditions.
VMI’s initial focus is on enabling primary care providers and healthcare retailers to perform routine eye exams in their diabetic patient population for early detection of diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy is a condition that affects nearly 1 in 3 diabetic patients and, if unmanaged, leads to severe vision impairment and blindness.
The BMC award will support VMI in advancing its core technology to a clinic-ready device and embark on clinical trials. “We are honored to be recognized by BioMaryland as recipients of this award. This will accelerate our efforts to develop and commercialize our technology, so we can bring diagnostic screening and timely intervention one critical step closer to the millions of diabetics who ignore their eye exams in hopes of saving their eyesight,” said M. Jason Brooke, CEO of Vasoptic Medical. VMI is currently undergoing an early feasibility clinical study, in conjunction with the University of Maryland, Baltimore, to capture images of human retinae with its imaging technology for the first time.
“We are impressed by the progress Vasoptic Medical has made in developing their technology to address the steadily growing need for better diabetes management. We anticipate the Center’s investment will help them move their technology from laboratory to the clinic,” said Dr. Judith Britz, Executive Director of the BioMaryland Center.
